A blog is a website whereby the owner of the blog has the facility to add new “posts” which in turn are then added to the website in chronological order for users to read.
Blogs are primarily used to provide commentary or news on a particular subject, but many personal blogs are also used as a form on online diary. Typically blogs contain text, images, links to other blogs and the ability to comment on what has been written – this is a very important aspect to the interactivity of a blog.
It estimated that in December 2007, there are over 112 million different blogs on the Internet.
Why should you use a blog for your business?
Using a blog for your business can help to develop a brand and give your business a more personal feel. It is also a great way to foster feedback for new ideas/products that you are thinking about developing.
In terms of cost, blogs offer a potentially large return on investment, as they are very cheap to setup. Blogging software such as Blogger or Wordpress is available to download, or they can host your own website for you for a small charge.
Once your blog is installed (which takes a matter of minutes), you can style, tweak and begin adding content.
In order to add new posts to your blog you do not need to know any HTML or coding. They all come with editors allowing you to format the text, add images and insert hyperlinks without coding a thing! If you do know a bit of HTML, you can switch to a code view and enter any code you wish (providing it doesn’t violate their terms and conditions if you are using a hosted solution)
How do people find out about my blog?
Various blogging platforms allow you to integrate your own blog into a network of other blogs so that it can be found quickly and easily on relating to subjects that you are writing (or blogging) about.
Technorati is a website that will “ping” or search your website for new posts on a regular basis and then report them back to their own website – which has literally hundreds of thousands of users every day searching for content.
